(ok, I'm nitpicking again...)

Did anyone else catch the disparity in Irulan and Wensicia's ages in the Children mini-series? I've been re-reading the prequels and realized that Irulan is the oldest of Shaddam's daughters and that Wensicia is 4 years younger than Irulan. However, her percieved age in the mini-series is older, and I *believe* at one point she refers to Irulan as "little sister"... Now, you could argue that the physical appearance of age settled on Wensicia more, due to Irulan spending many years on Arrakis, and therefor being exposed to greater amounts of spice, preserving her appearance of youth, but methinks that the writers/director simply overlooked the Corrino family timeline...

Was a green Dune a good idea?

I was wondering, was Liets idea of a green Dune a good idea? or was it actually a set back, I mean the freman become weak and dont use there still suits and stuff, worms die, less spice. But this question begs a bigger question, how does Frank Herbert interpret the passing of events, are historical events good, bad or both? For example the Tyrant is good and bad right? or just one or another? I was just wondering what you guys thought.

During my winter hibernating i have been reviewing the star wars trilogy, and from what i have read its odd how closely related the jedi are to the Bene Gesserit , and the Kwisatz Haderach.

Does the force go as far as the Dune Universe?

He is the king of all the land
In the Kingdom of the sands
Of a time tomorrow.
He rules the sandworms and the Fremen
In a land amongst the stars
Of an age tomorrow.
He is destined to be a King
He rules over everything
On the land called planet Dune.
Bodywater is your life
And without it you would die
On the desert the planet Dune.
Without a stillsuit you would fry
On the sands so hot and dry
In a world called Arrakis.
It is a land that's rich in spice
The sandriders and the mice
That they call the Muad'Dib.
He is the Kwizatz Haderach.
He is born of Caladan
And will take the Gom Jabbar.
He has the power to foresee
Or to look into the past
He is the ruler of the stars
The time will come for him
to lay claim his crown,
And then the foe yes
they'll be cut down,
You'll see he'll be the
best that there's been,
Messiah supreme
true leader of men,
And when the time
for judgement's at hand
Don't fret he's strong
and he'll make a stand,
Against evil and fire
That spreads through the land,
He has the power
to make it all end.

Source: The Digital Bits

1984's "Dune" by Director David Lynch to this day remains a hallmark of the sci-fi genre even though the film has gone through numerous cuts without the director's consent. His approved theatrical version to this day however remains heavily criticised for its truncated feel. As a result al sorts of different versions exist on DVD or video, and talk on an "Extended Edition" scheduled to hit May this year drew little excitement.

That's about to change though. The Digital Bits has done some digging with their sources at Universal and have learned the real reason behind their delay of the "Dune: Extended Edition" DVD (it's currently unscheduled) is that after years of saying he would never revisit "Dune", at the 11th hour director David Lynch decided that he wanted to be involved in the new DVD after all. This means that when it's eventually released, not only is the DVD going to include the original theatrical version of the film... it will include a brand new "director's extended cut" edited by Lynch himself.

Question(s) for y'all

As a piece of preliminary info, I am an aspiring composer of film/tv/game style digital orchestral music. As an excersise and a project of passion, i have decided to follow the lead of some friends who wrote a score for the LOTR books, and compose a score for the first Dune novel.

I am in the preliminary phase of noting where cues should take place, what the feel of said cues should be, and the peripheral stuff of what vocal/spoken word samples should be used/created(i.e: the litany against fear, the "maker's prayer", some of the chapter header quotations, etc.)... I am curently thinking of writing themes for either characters, or houses, and augmenting their basic themes as sections occur where greater clarity is gained, or major action occurs with said characters or houses, but I would really like the input of people here, on the characters, as you see them... particularly Houses Atreides, Harkonnen, and Corrino, and the major players within these. This is a beloved story to me, and I know that I have my own particular interpretation of these characters, their nature and motives, but I would benefit greatly from other perspectives that I hadn't considered... also feel free to weigh in on how you would envision the music corresponding with these characters and various "scenes" from the novel(i.e: Caladan, the arrival of House Atreides on Arrakis, the Harkonnen attack, Paul kills Jamis, Paul summons a worm, etc.). I very much respect and appreciate y'alls passion for this story and universe, as it echos my own... please help me make this project truly great :)

Thanks,

-Drew

Stewart as Gurney Halleck

I don't know about you guys but...I'm just watching the original Dune movie and I am realizing for the first time that Halleck is played by none other than Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard). I guess it's been a long time since I watched this movie. I think not since I was like eight years old and totally grossed out by the Baron!!! I just wanted to post here to see if any of you had ever had the same realization? I'm thinking that I may have more respect for this version than I ever did, just because he makes such a wonderful Halleck! This is my first post here and I was so glad when I found a Dune tribe. It's like a portal into another world.

My favorite quote from Gurney,

"Moods are for cattle and loveplay, not for fighting!"

I can just hear Stewart's voice saying that!

Got it in DVD form online. It's not the best, but it is good to have the longplay version. Looks like it was done by Force Video in Australia. At any rate, pretty good quality.

Anyone have any other editions?

OK. We know who the bad choices were. You be the casting director. Pick a character. Who would be good?

Nicole Kidman as Irulan
Orlando Bloom as Duncan
Patrick Stewart as Gurney
Judi Dench as a Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam

a future without thinking machines?

Anything is possible.
I wonder what direction we are headed with Artificial Intelligence. Star Trek, Matrix, Terminator, and Dune warn about a future where machines become agressive and expansionist.

How would we safeguard against this? Maybe if we are smart and paranoid, we'd never turn total control over to a computer. So a technological Dune would exist where computers remain as tools and never administrators.

Geez, makes me think that the robotic weapons of the future will have to be strictly monitored.

Science on verge of new `Creation'
More than 3.5 billion years after nature transformed non-living matter into living things, populating Earth with a cornucopia of animals and plants, scientists say they are finally ready to try their hand at creating life.

If they succeed, humanity will enter a new age of "living technology," where harnessing the power of life to spontaneously adapt to complex situations could solve problems that now defy modern engineering.

What non-Dune books have you read by Frank?
I think I've read all of them. Ones that I loved
Eye - a collection of short stories with great Dune illustrations
The Green Brain - a story about insects which have managed to organize to destroy human civilization.
Hellstrom's Hive - agents infiltrate a "cult" of humans who model their life much like insects.
The Dragon under the sea - great story about a futuristic subarine sent to the artic to steal oil from the enemy. A must for anyone who enjoys submarine fiction.

I must loan Dune.
Dune is the mind-expander.
Dune is the big-difference that causes speculation for the reader.
I will buy new copies of Dune.
I will permit my friends to discuss what reading Dune means with me...and in front of the un-initiated.
And when many of my new friends have gotten past the first book...I will turn them on to Dune Messiah and Children of Dune in order for them to stay on the path.
Where my copy of Dune has gone there will be nothing but spice awareness.
Only Dune will remain.
